Contribution ZJA Bruggensymposium November 14

On November 14, Ralph Kieft (architect partner at ZJA) and Wiebe Strick (project architect at ZJA) will present the longest bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Flanders at the 10th Bruggensymposium in Utrecht. The recently opened bridge in Machelen (Belgium) not only provides a safe crossing over Leopold III Lane (A201) but also serves as the missing link in the cycling network in and around Brussels.

Long bridge with slender silhouette

Central to ZJA's presentation is the question of how to design a bridge of this scale, with a slender silhouette and minimal ecological impact. The design process, technical challenges, and choices made to integrate the bridge harmoniously into the (urban) landscape will be discussed.

More than a connection

According to the bridge foundation, a well-designed bridge is more than just a connection from A to B; it is an essential part of public space and serves as a mirror of society. It represents social, cultural, and aesthetic values.

And can grow into a recognizable and orienting landmark as a link between different landscapes. Furthermore, a bridge can be a powerful symbol of transformation within the circular economy: from waste to value.

Bruggensymposium on November 14

During the symposium, six projects will be presented that connect communities, stimulate creativity, and promote sustainable principles, all designed and realized with consideration for their surroundings.

The symposium (Dutch spoken) will take place on November 14 at Villa Jongerius, Kanaalweg 64, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Registration is open until October 30 via the website of the Bridge Foundation, where the entire program can also be found.

ZJA Architects & Engineers designed, as part of the consultancy firm MoVeR0 and on behalf of De Werkvennootschap, the architectural design of the bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Leopold -III Lane (A201). This bridge is part of the 'Working on the Ring' program, through which De Werkvennootschap is working towards better mobility and livability in the area surrounding the Ring around Brussels. In the coming years, investments will be made in improved public transport, the redevelopment of the Ring around Brussels, and safe, fast cycling connections.
