On Sunday May 7th, the eleventh Open Sites Day will be held in Belgium. Waterwegen & Zeekanaal NV and THV Leieland will open the Harelbeke construction site for the general public. During the Open Sites Day, visitors can take a look behind the scenes and discover the works being done in Harelbeke to secure the future of inland shipping.
On this day, visitors can see how the works on the new lock complex are progressing and can take a close-up look at the new Hogebrug. Between 10:00 - 17:00 one can visit the temporary dam and the lock complex at Harelbeke, following a 3 km long walking trail. Those who wish to see how a lock operates can take a boat trip along the temporary lock complex. Both the new lock complex in the Leie at Harelbeke and the Hogebrug are designed by ZJA.
The project for the new Harelbeke lock complex is part of the transnational Seine-Schelde project. In order to provide ships with a larger load capacity a smooth passage between Seine and Schelde, the shipping lane is being deepened. Seine Schelde Vlaanderen wants to make transportation by water a full-fledged alternative to freight transport by road.
