The jury about Kustwerk Katwijk
The parking garage Kustwerk Katwijk is a rare example of how one can succeed in getting various objectives in line as to create a beautiful project. The modern parking garage offers room for 600 cars and at the same time it protects the Dutch town of Katwijk from the North Sea. In summer the parking garage offers parking space for tourists. In winter it keeps the center of Katwijk almost free of parked cars. The landscape around the parking garage offers undulating entrances close to the beach and sea, connected by a well situated footpath that maintains a connection with both the promenade and the sea.
Underground parking garage
The exceptional parking garage is an integral part of the town’s new water defense system, protecting the town against the North Sea. The garage is situated underneath a natural dune landscape. Integrating the parking garage with the water defense system not only protects Katwijk from the Sea, but also offers the tourists an opportunity to park directly near the beach.
Commissioned by the city of Katwijk, Royal HaskoningDHV drafted the architectural design of the parking garage and translated this into a thorough master plan. Based on this master plan, Ballast Nedam and ZJA Zwarts & Jansma Architects drafted the integral design (architectural, functional, structural and building services) for the realization of the parking garage. Special attention was given to the integration and materialisation of the entrances in the dune landscape, as one of the main principles of the architectural masterplan and the public domain, which was designed by OKRA Landscape Architects.
