The Hogebrug, which connects the center of Harelbeke with Overleie, will be opened by Waterwegen en Zeekanaal NV and the city of Harelbeke on June 19th. The event starts at 11:30 at the Hogebrug and is everyone is welcome to attend. At the end of the day, the new bridge will be opened for traffic.
Recently the bridge was painted and work was done on the foundation and drainage of the bridge. The final works on the bridge will be completed this month, asphalt will be laid and railings placed on the bridge.
The bridge has a broader section in the middle with an observation post where pedestrians can enjoy the view of the river the Leie. This middle section includes a square with benches to function as a meeting point for pedestrians and cyclists.
ZJA Zwarts & Jansma Architects has been commissioned with the architectural design of the lock complex at the Leie at Harelbeke of which the Hogebrug is part. In turn, the lock complex is part of the greater Seine-Schelde project in which the waterway is adapted to accommodate larger vessels. The new bridge is higher than the old one in order to create a passage for these larger vessels.
