ZJA Zwarts & Jansma Architects has been commissioned by the consortium BAAK Blankenburgverbinding to design the A24 Blankenburg connection. The new connection will ensure a better access to the port of Rotterdam and the Rotterdam region.
The project includes the construction of a tunnel under the Scheur, a branch of the Rhine and Maas river to the west of Rotterdam. In total, the project involves a 4 km long motorway including the tunnel, to form the new connection A24 between the motorways A20 and A15. With the region characterized by an area of outstanding natural beauty on the north side, the motorway will be constructed via a land tunnel crossing the Aalkeetpolder.
The project plays an important role in the realization of the Masterplan Rotterdam Vooruit, a vision for the development of the Rotterdam region for the period 2020 - 2040.
The Dutch Road and Transport Authority has awarded the contract for the construction of the Blankenburgverbinding to the consortium BAAK Blankenburg-Verbinding consisting of Ballast Nedam, DEME and Macquarie. Bosch Slabbers Landscape Architects is responsible for the landscaping of the project.
