Rob Torsing (architect and partner at ZJA), says, “Space on earth is scarce. Both the ELRT and Zuidasdok are examples – naturally enough – of how within ZJA’s vision architectonic design power can be deployed to create an optimal combination of user value, experience value and future value. Through the invention of better transport opportunities, but at the same time with the benefit of creating more and better public space, and a pleasant residential environment in dense urban areas. We are therefore extremely proud of this double nomination for the Architizer A+ Awards!”
Innovative structural concept for a liveable city
Commissioned by the South Korean Railroad Research Institute (KRRI), architectural studio ZJA, Woosung D&C, C&SC, GS E&C, SIDstudio and Iv-infra came up with an innovative solution for a raised light rail system in a dense urban area that would make less of a spatial impact than usual.
The extraordinary structural concept made a maximum span of 200 metres feasible, while remaining exceptionally strong and stable in form, and retaining a clear view for passengers on one side. Scale models of the elegant design have since passed tests for stability and for resistance to wind and earthquakes with flying colours, and two full scale mock-ups have been built. An 800-metre pilot project is in the offing.
Efficient traffic intersection
In collaboration with BoschSlabbers Landscape Architects and Team V Architecture, ZJA created the architectonic design for Zuidasdok. It will allow the existing station, currently squeezed between the motorway and the Zuidas, to be renovated and expanded, while parts of the A10 Zuid will be widened and put into a tunnel.
New space for the city
With green space as its basic medium, this architectonic design will not only help to improve the accessibility of Amsterdam and the northern Randstad, it will also make an essential contribution to the vitality and liveability of the city. Pleasant green public space will be added to the city and districts that are now separated will be connected together once more.
