Early this morning, the first cars drove over the new motorway A1 Amsterdam / Amersfoort between junctions Diemen and Muiderberg. During the past weekend, many activities took place converting the old A1 to the new A1 motorway via the new bridge over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and the aquaduct at Muiden. The old railway bridge was demolished and the new railway bridge Muiderberg was transported into its final position. All three structures are designed by ZJA.
In May, the 255 meter long and then 8400 ton weighing new railway bridge already crossed the A1. Next week the new railway bridge will be connected to the track. The aquaduct Muiden and the bridge over the Amsterdam-Rhine canal in the direction Amersfoort were as well inaugurated today. The new part of the A1 motorway now runs through the aquaduct Muiden and underneath the river Vecht. The motorway in the direction Amsterdam will be opened next month. The aquaduct Muiden took three years to construct and is the largest aquaduct in Europe. Beginning of 2017, the bridge Amsterdam-Rhine Canal will be opened for traffic in the direction Amsterdam.
The bridge Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, the aquaduct Muiden and the railway bridge Muiderberg are part of the road expansion A1 / A6 Diemen - Almere Havendreef (a sub-project concerning the road expansion Schiphol - Amsterdam – Almere) and are commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat and the consortium SAAone (consisting of Volker Wessels, Boskalis, HOCHTIEF and DIF).
