ZJA Zwarts & Jansma Architects will provide the architectural design for the new Sportoase swimming pool in Deurne Antwerp, Belgium. This new aquatic centre will offer an ideal combination of relaxation, sportsmanship and recreation. Besides a sports pool, the centre will also include a wave pool, slides, whirlpools and a spectacular outdoor pool with a sunbathing area. Part of the outdoor swimming pool bottom floor, which overhangs the main entrance, will moreover be made of glass.
In the design, ZJA has opted to position the entrance of the new aquatic centre at the green square of Groot Schijn park. As a result, the swimming pool is literally located in the park. Both the outdoor pool and the sunbathing area have a view of the park. The new centre will be given a wooden façade and glass walls, thus connecting it to the green environment. Moreover, the glass walls will increase the interaction between the different spaces and between inside and outside.
Bureau OMGEVING will make the design for the area surrounding the aquatic centre. In addition, they will also be responsible for the technical detailing of the project.
The new aquatic centre does not yet have an official name. Until the end of February, one can vote for one of 10 future names that a jury has pre-selected. The winning name will be announced at the beginning of March.
The construction of the aquatic centre will start in the spring of 2018. The centre is expected to be completed in the summer of 2020.
